In this notable work Wood explores the personal and ideological underpinnings of supporters of a Caliphate across five continents.
Wood befriends the Australian preacher, and now former Muslim, Musa Cerantonio.
He also corresponds with “American Taliban” John Walker Lindh, who was then still in prison in the United States.
This book grew out of an online viral article Wood wrote for The Atlantic magazine.
Both the book, and the article, seek to explore the myriad of reasons for people supporting the Islamic State.
More importantly it provides a face to the believers, developing characters throughout the book.
It reads more as an exploration of these characters than a dry inquiry into Jihadism.
I would recommend the audiobook as well as the print edition, though Wood did no narrate the audiobook it is still worth a listen.
